New this year, the one-off race weekend is the ultimate climax to the Caterham Motorsport racing calendar; and we are proud to become the first manufacturer to offer drivers from a club championship in the UK the chance to compete in an exclusive event on American soil.
Drivers’ cars will be packed and transported over to America for the racing extravaganza as entrants go wheel-to-wheel against friends and foes from the Caterham racing fraternity.
What’s more, after months of negotiations and work with the Motor Sports Association (MSA), Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the Automobile Competition Committee for the United States (ACCUS), Caterham will provide read-across of UK rules and regulations meaning the race weekend will mirror the regulations of the UK motorsport calendar.
Olympic legend Sir Chris Hoy has become the first competitor to sign up for the trip and will be one of around 30 drivers participating in this once in a lifetime opportunity.
The four-day event package available to club racers includes two days of exclusive open pitlane testing on the Thursday and Friday before four races over the weekend. Cars on show will span the whole motorsport series, right up to the Superlight Seven 420R Championship.
Built in 1957, the Californian based track has hosted numerous two and four-wheel racing events including American Le Mans Series, Superbike World Championship and MotoGP; and now the lucky Caterham racing drivers will race on this world class 11-turn, 2.2-mile circuit.
While the track is a favourite of racers and fans worldwide, it’s the well-known ‘Corkscrew’ section of the track which will have our drivers chomping at the bit as they get ready to descend an eye-watering 59ft – the equivalent of a 5½ story drop – in just 450ft.
“When the race was announced I signed up instantly,” said Sir Chris Hoy. “What an adventure it will be and what a way to finish off the 2018 racing calendar.”
Simon Lambert, Caterham Motorsport Director, added: “If we were to put a sporting analogy to the Caterham Challenge Cup, this is our World Cup Final for Caterham Motorsport. It will be the pinnacle, the climax to our racing season. It’s a huge deal to us and we want it to be for our drivers, too. The only thing I’m disappointed about is we have to wait to December to take part.”
